Data Encryption FAQ: Working With Unprotected Removable Media

What happens when I insert a removable device into my UC Irvine Medical Center PC?

If the removable device has not yet been encrypted you will be prompted to encrypt that device.

  • Log into your protected UC Irvine Medical Center computer and insert an unprotected removable device.
  • You are prompted to encrypt the device, as shown in the example dialog below:

  • Click on "Yes" and you will be prompted to create a password for that removable device.
  • Once the password is accepted, a small piece of software, encryption keys and policies are copied to the removable device. Pre-existing data on the device is not encrypted.

What if I don't want to encrypt my removable media?

  • Log into your protected UC Irvine Medical Center computer and insert an unprotected removable device
  • You are prompted to encrypt the device, as shown in the example dialog below:

  • Click on "No" and you will receive no more dialogs from the encryption software.
  • Open Windows Explorer or access files on your removable media via the application of your choice.
  • In general, you will be able to use that removable device as you always did as long as you do not copy data to it from your protected laptop or desktop. You are able to read data already on the removable device and copy it to your protected computer, but you cannot edit those files and save them back to the removable device, nor can you add new files to the media from your protected UC Irvine Medical Center computer.

What happens to data I change or add after my removable device is encrypted?

Any files copied to or edited on this media will be automatically encrypted from this point on.
