Password Complexity for Mobile Devices
Protection of confidential or restricted information is taken seriously by the University. Access to information on portable devices requires that controls are activated to prevent unauthorized access.
Mobile devices accessing the UCI Health Network will be required to have a Passcode with a minimum 4 digits. This Passcode is also sometimes called PIN or Password. We recommend that Passcodes of greater complexity be used if at all possible.
Devices will also be limited to the number of failed log-on attempts before the device will lock.
Mobile devices include iPhones, iPads, Android, BlackBerry, Windows phones and similar portable units.
Complex Passcode Recommendation for Mobile Devices
- The Complex Passcode should contain at least 6 characters.
- Avoid using words found in the dictionary.
- Repeating or sequential digits or characters should be avoided (i.e.- 33333, 12345, RRRRRR, abcdefg, etc.)
- Complex passcodes should contain at least one or more of the following:
- English characters (a – Z)
- Base 10 digits (0 – 9)
- Non-alphanumeric (For example: !, $, #, or %)
iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch)
For iOS devices with Exchange security in place, you will need to disable “Simple Passcode.” To do this is very simple and it is recommended to use a passcode different than your UCI Net ID password.
First click “Settings.”
Scroll down and you will see the security settings. Tap the “Passcode Lock” setting and it will ask for your current PIN.
Next switch “Simple Passcode” from “On” to “Off.”
It will ask for your PIN twice, and then ask for your new Complex Passcode twice as well.
Now you have a complex password. When you try to unlock your phone, you will now see the following screen.
Complex password were introduced in Android 3.0. To configure:
Go in Settings.
Tap on Lock Screen.
Tap on Screen lock.
Enter the PIN (if prompted; if not, skip to next step).
Tap on Password.
Enter your new complex password, tap on Continue when finished.
Confirm your new password.
Your new complex password has been set.
BlackBerry devices by default have the ability to create Complex Passcodes. When creating your password, you can use the full QWERTY keyboard.
To change your password from your UCI Net ID password or to make it more secure, navigate to “Settings.”
Scroll down a bit to the “Security” section and tap “Password.”
Select “Change Password” and enter your current password.
At the prompt, type your new password twice.
Currently Windows Phones are only capable of utilizing complex passwords when they are being forced from the exchange server. As of right now policy allows simple PINs so you will not have the option of setting a complex password.
